Federer made his retirement official on September 15th via Twitter. The Laver Cup, which is presently in its fifth edition and is being held this weekend, September 23 through 25, in London, will be his final ATP appearance.

After that, he will continue to play tennis, but not professionally. Nevertheless, his influence will endure, in part thanks to his new Mercedes partnership, which will feature a number of side projects grouped under the umbrella of “Neon Legacy.”

Throughout the competition, Mercedes showed off the one-of-a-kind neon-yellow Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S E PERFORMANCE in remembrance of the tennis legend.

According to Mercedes, the unique neon-yellow shade “pays respect to the yellow felt of tennis balls.” A charitable tennis project will be funded in 2023 with the money raised from the sale of the car, which will also include Roger Federer’s signature.

Mercedes-Benz has provided the fleet of cars for the Laver Cup’s competitors, officials, and visitors ever since the competition’s inception. The players are once again transported by two EQS vans this year, one blue for “Team Europe” and one red for “Team World.”

“The decision is bittersweet. I will miss all the tour has given me, so this is a difficult decision. However, there is also much to rejoice in. I think I’m one of the luckiest individuals alive,” the tennis player added.
