After losing in a doubles match against Rafael Nadal at the 2022 Laver Cup at the 02 Arena in London, Roger Federer announced his retirement from tennis on Saturday. Following the defeat in what would be his final match of his career, Federer was hugged by his teammates before being asked to say a few final words to the crowd about the match, the sport, and his career. During his long and touching farewell speech, the Swiss legend was unable to control his tears.

The 20-time Grand Slam champion praised his teammates, Nadal in particular, for supporting him at this point in his career as he took over the microphone from retired tennis pro Jim Courier, who also hugged and congratulated Federer on his successful career.

Surely, we can find a way to overcome this! I tell you, today was fantastic. I assured the boys that I wasn’t sad; I was happy. Being here feels amazing. A final time was spent tying my shoes, which I enjoyed doing.

I’ve at least been able to speak. I was never able to converse in my eyesight, so I’m doing much better now! It’s nice that everyone from my family is here tonight. Since everyone has been here for the past 13 years—girls and boys alike—I have had a ton of fun. My wife has been so encouraging and…

She could have stopped me a long, long time ago, but she didn’t, said Federer, who couldn’t help but choke back tears to continue. It’s fantastic because she kept me going. Thanks a lot! He ended by saying, “I always find it humorous. My mother is constantly to blame for anything since, of all, without her, we wouldn’t be here.

“My parents have been wonderful, and I’m grateful. Much obliged! It has really been fantastic, and there are far too many people to thank. My gosh. An amazing evening. Greetings to all of you. Thank you everybody. Thank you everybody, thank you.” as he ended his speech.
